why I got into audio...

I had ear problems when I was young. I had 6 ear operations before I was 9 years old.
they probably have a less barbaric method now but they used to put holes in your eardrums to let the fluid drain from behind them. everytime I got an infection it would turn bad and I'd get tubes. It sucked.

I was fortunate and my hearing is within normal ranges for a 40 year old.  lucky because I rely on them for everything I do!

So to go back to the 10 year old me..something happened that year that changed my life. lennon was shot and killed. they started playing beatles music non stop on the radio. I learned every song and I loved them like most people do. but I started playing guitar and really letting these songs sink in.

When I got to university I started a band with my friend Dave and we were called the inbreds. just bass, played like a guitar by me and drums by him. the songs were melodic and owed much to the beatles which was very obvious to most people. but the band did well and we toured all over the place. the two of us ended up moving to halifax nova scotia where I still live. the band broke up in 98. we had some really awesome opportunities. I worked in a record store until one of my friends invited me to work on a new show he was acting in called trailer park boys. from that 3rd season on I worked as the sound recordist. this led to other sound jobs as well as a stint as a foley artist in a production house. foley is probably the best job in the world.
On the side I never stopped writing music. I released a solo album in 2000 but after that I started getting interested in the process of recording myself. over 4 years I learned the basics and recorded an album that in hindsight taught me more than I bargained for. I started getting in to DIY and built an la-2a clone a mic pre and I continue to dabble in that area. I love it!
I never tire of finding the right combination of mic, pre amp compressor.
I find that if stuff sounds good you actually play better because you can hear it so well!
I also write music for television. and that' great when I can get it.
I consider myself very lucky in the work I've had.

anyway ward beck stuff entered my life when I was visiting my friend howie beck in Toronto. he had a little console he got from TV ontario and it is just stunning. I think it has 460s or 470s. it definitely has the lights. his music is meticulously recorded but the punch and power of the board. I couldn't get over it. I loved the style to . I think it's a m1204 but I'm not certain. anyway hearing was believing.

that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
